Finally it was dark and the icy cold rain that started half an hour before was coming down like bullets from a machine gun, stinging and pounding me all over. The icy water ran down the middle of my back along my spine, and I began to shake, hard, like a drunk craving another drink.
There were eight of us in all; just watching and waiting. We grew impatient, and who could blame us, we had been hunting this quarry for close to 6 weeks, day and night.
At least one innocent man had been killed and there were rumors of another, although the second body had not yet been found. In this concrete and steel jungle it was surprising no one had stumbled upon it. While we waited in the miserable cold, our prey was warm, rested, and well fed. This adversary was the most elusive bounty I had pursed to date.
As the freezing rain pelted my body, I asked myself how I got into this position in the first place? Today it was frozen temperatures that only penguins and polar bears would welcome. But I’ve also hunted in intolerable heat and humidity. Naps at odd hours constitutes sleep, and the food is always greasy and tasteless. On this pursuit I couldn't ask for any better group of Hunters and professionals to lead, while every time I put myself out here, I put myself in peril.
Maybe my wife is right! Am I on some glory seeking path of destruction that's only going to leave her and our son looking down on me at my own funeral, asking why I took such chances and pushed myself.
I am not being immodest, I am the best Hunter around. I find the prey when everyone else has already given up. I have a stellar reputation from others in my field. Now in the icy rain, eight men are waiting for me to give the signal, and end this chase. And tonight’s prey is worse than any wild animal I could think of. Your regular everyday drug dealer, only with a twist. He chooses to sell drugs to innocent children, then uses them for sex and money. No, my wife is wrong. I’m not in this for any glory, admiration, or even a 'pat on the back' for what I'm doing. If I don't do this, it won't get done. I can't live with myself if I walk away from the Hunt. I must bring this thing to its end.
Suddenly I see some movement at the motel window. I give the signal. I hit the door with all my being, smashing through it to find the dealer laying on the bed with one of the innocent children. His gun at is at the foot of the bed, and as I enter the room, he looks at me and then at the gun, and then back again at me.
Will I make it before he gets the weapon? In that instant I don't even remember the men are behind me; it's totally between me and him. "Don't even think about it," I say, as I grab both his hands and handcuff him. I suddenly relax, oblivious to my icy shakes.
